Researchers at the University of Manchester’s Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute have identified a specialized population of activated dendritic cells that plays a critical role in coordinating the immune system’s attack on cancer.

Using new mouse models that allowed them to specifically track and remove these cells, the researchers showed that activated dendritic cells are essential for effective anti-cancer immune responses. Without them, cancer-killing T cells struggled both to become fully activated and to sustain their anti-tumor activity inside tumors.
The findings highlight the importance of looking beyond the tumor itself, toward the wider ecosystem of cells and molecular signals that shape cancer progression and treatment response.
Studying cancer from multiple biological angles can help uncover the mechanisms associated with exceptional survival, and ultimately reveal new therapeutic targets.
